Before looking at grills, measure twice:
Total patio area — length × width of the usable space
The grill zone — where the grill will live, with room to open the lid fully
Walkways — keep at least 90 cm (3 ft) of clear path for people and furniture
Overhead clearance — check for awnings, roofs, or branches above the grill area
Write these numbers down — you'll compare them against grill dimensions, not feelings.
Grill "size" means three things:
Cooking area (in² or cm²) — how much food per batch
Overall footprint — width × depth of the cart, lid open height
Weight — matters for balconies and decks (check load limits)

Sides and back: 25–50 cm (10–20 in) clearance from combustible walls
Above: open lid height plus 50 cm clearance from overhead structures
Never place under low eaves, wooden pergolas without fire-rated materials, or enclosed spaces
Wind check: position so prevailing wind doesn't blow flames toward structures or seating
When in doubt, give more room — heat and grease spatter reach farther than you expect.
